Wallpaper for singles becomes Xmas best-seller
Single people in Germany are snapping up wallpaper with life-size pictures of ordinary looking people so they don't feel lonely at Christmas.
The award winning wallpaper, which depicts life-sized people in everyday poses, sipping wine or waiting expectantly on the couch, has become a best-seller in Germany.
Creator Susanne Schmidt said: "It creates the feeling that there are other people in the room and alleviates feelings of loneliness, especially at Xmas.
"The friends we provide are not very talkative, but they are guaranteed not to argue with you at Xmas, promise to be there all the time and don't leave dirty dishes or argue over the TV remote control."
Schmidt, 34, and co-designer Andrea Baum, 36, convinced Berlintapete to distribute their Singles Wallpaper after it won a prize at the German Design Council's New Walls, Please competition.
Each fake friend consists of two to three rolls of UV-resistant paper at £8 to £10 each. The wallpaper line shows average-looking but well-groomed people acting out scenes in the bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. They can be pulled off and stuck back on as often as needed.
According to Schmidt the next step is to create personalised "partner wallpaper" for people who only see their partners at the weekend.
